- Intro
- Sports history
- Sports have become the backbone in American culture but should it be?
- 2013, 7.7 million teens played on a high school sports team
- sports have dramatically grown in direction of competition
- They began to take an important lead at the start of the 19th century with influence of ww1, the great depression, and ww2
- Massachusetts became 1st school to require kids to go to school in 1852
- clear focus leisure time (expanded children to playing for fun to competition)
- More competitive = integrated in public schools
- Great Depression
- Sport leagues suffered financially leading to the development of organizations outside of school such as YMCA, Pop Warner Football, Little League Baseball
- Thesis
- Considering the formation of such organizations it is but necessary to have sports in school.
- Sports should be banned from school because its a Distraction, it Reduces Grades, and its a Big Cost.
- Distraction
- Sports are ingrained in American schools unlike any other schools worldwide
- South Korea, 15 yr olds rank 4th on the international math test
- U.S ranks 31st
- Decreases sense of accomplishments and pride
- Newspaper we see scores of football or basketball game
- less excited to get A nor as competitive like out on field
- Sports are a DISTRACTION it Shifts academic focus
- extracurricular meaning outside the regular course of study
- takes away from homework and school time
- game days students get pulled out early which is affecting grades and attendance
- precluding students from the opportunity to engage in studies
- unfair for other students when athletes get extra day to turn in assignments
- Hindering the development of other passions
- less interested in art, music, design etc
- impressive to play sports and maintain 4.0
- 4.0 or 2.0 = higher gpa
- Lower grades
- Accumulates stress and pressure
- practice and play more than study and do homework
- on average hs students are assigned 3.5 hrs of homework per weeknight
- overwhelming to keep good grades
- little to no time to work on homework
- exhausted no energy to focus
- How do students manage to maintain a 4.0 and play sports?
- make own time by staying up
- no sleep
- adolescents need 8.5 to 9.5 hrs per night
- stressful especially when taking exams
- not entirely awake therefore not ready nor focused
- not enough effort in academics
- 93% of south korean students graduate hs; 77% of American students
- Big Cost
- funding from local and state for educational purposes
- sports receive a higher per pupil funding b/c less people participate
- Football $1,300; math $618
- cost of 1 football season = music teacher for 1 entire school yr
- expenses covered by the district include coaches salary for jv/varsity, fees for officials, transportation, field maintenance, tournament fees, and awards
- Conclusion
- people join sports for personal enjoyment, love of competition, healthful form of exercise
- positive influence but unnecessary for school b/c takes academic focus
- Image of play before work
- not consider an environment to learn
- destroys concept that school can be interesting; will not drive students to pursue it
- Leadership/ Teamwork

- Programs
- group projects
- Time management
- learn when to do homework so they have leisure time
- Active/Fitness
