Writing Standards 6-12

English Standard:

Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1–3 up to and including grades 11–12.)

  • Intro
    • Sports history
      • Sports have become the backbone in American culture but should it be?
      • 2013, 7.7 million teens played on a high school sports team
      • sports have dramatically grown in direction of competition
      • They began to take an important lead at the start of the 19th century with influence of ww1, the great depression, and ww2
      • Massachusetts became 1st school to require kids to go to school in 1852
        • clear focus leisure time (expanded children to playing for fun to competition)
      • More competitive = integrated in public schools
    • Great Depression
      • Sport leagues suffered financially leading to the development of organizations outside of school such as YMCA, Pop Warner Football, Little League Baseball
    • Thesis
      • Considering the formation of such organizations it is but necessary to have sports in school.
      • Sports should be banned from school because its a Distraction, it Reduces Grades, and its a Big Cost.
  • Distraction
    • Sports are ingrained in American schools unlike any other schools worldwide
      • South Korea, 15 yr olds rank 4th on the international math test
      • U.S ranks 31st
    • Decreases sense of accomplishments and pride
      • Newspaper we see scores of football or basketball game
      • less excited to get A nor as competitive like out on field  
    • Sports are a DISTRACTION it Shifts academic focus
      • extracurricular meaning outside the regular course of study
        • takes away from homework and school time
      • game days students get pulled out early which is affecting grades and attendance
      • precluding students from the opportunity to engage in studies
      • unfair for other students when athletes get extra day to turn in assignments
    • Hindering the development of other passions
      • less interested in art, music, design etc
      • impressive to play sports and maintain 4.0
        • 4.0 or 2.0 = higher gpa
  • Lower grades
    • Accumulates stress and pressure
      • practice and play more than study and do homework
      • on average hs students are assigned 3.5 hrs of homework per weeknight
      • overwhelming to keep good grades
      • little to no time to work on homework
      • exhausted no energy to focus
    • How do students manage to maintain a 4.0 and play sports?
      • make own time by staying up
    • no sleep
      • adolescents need 8.5 to 9.5 hrs per night
    • stressful especially when taking exams
      • not entirely awake therefore not ready nor focused
    • not enough effort in academics
      • 93% of south korean students graduate hs; 77% of American students
  • Big Cost
    • funding from local and state for educational purposes
    • sports receive a higher per pupil funding b/c less people participate
    • Football $1,300; math $618
    • cost of 1 football season = music teacher for 1 entire school yr
    • expenses covered by the district include coaches salary for jv/varsity, fees for officials, transportation, field maintenance, tournament fees, and awards
  • Conclusion
    • people join sports for personal enjoyment, love of competition, healthful form of exercise
    • positive influence but unnecessary for school b/c takes academic focus
    • Image of play before work
      • not consider an environment to learn
    • destroys concept that school can be interesting; will not drive students to pursue it
